This porcelain bowl is covered with white glaze and decorated on the outside with several stalks of bamboo and a dark lake rock. Inscribed in black enamel glaze on the other side are two lines taken from the five-character regulated verse entitled, "Harmonizing with Vice Minister Xu''s Praise of Bamboo," written by the Tang dynasty poet Lu Xiang. In front of the poetry is a seal painted in red for "Fengcai" and followed by two for "Binran" and "Junzi." The interior of the bowl is undecorated, and on the underside is a reign mark in blue that reads, "Made in the Yongzheng reign." This bowl survives as one of a pair, the decoration echoing the contents of a record of the Yongzheng emperor in 1731 ordering the firing of the bowls with a decoration of "more than half of verdant bamboo, and less for copying texts, poems, inscriptions of praise, and seals." The two seals at the end, together reading "Binran juzi (Gentlemen of Accomplishment)," echo the motifs in the decoration, conveying the idea of the bamboo as a metaphor for the lofty scholar.
