默菴记。会稽俞先生。年富气盛时。尝以惊世绝俗之智。悬河决峡之辩。为当时所推。旣晚。更事益深。奉朝命为学者师于东南小邑。乃喜为简黙。号其燕处之室曰黙庵。其弟子闻而疑之曰。先生之为斯号也。不亦异乎。人之达其志意。明天下之理。而成物化民者。以其能言也。故教令不宣于家。则亲爱踈。辞命不脩于乡。则长幼乖。军旅不言。则无以用众。宾客不言。则无以成礼。居乎朝廷。为大臣。而好循黙。则难以定国计。和民人。为谏官近职。而不务言事。则有旷官窃位之讥。先生为人师。以教民善俗为职业。封域之内。有细行之违。片言之悖。先生耻之。乌可以黙自处乎哉。馀闻而咲曰。是知黙之为黙。而不知黙之非黙也。知言之不可止。而不知非黙则不能为言也。子尝见夫万仞之渊乎。方其静也。沉奫涵畜。不震不激。泊乎无声。杳乎莫测。惟其积之久而不妄出也。故一旦决而为川。达乎江河。声之所撼。闻数百里。使其不深。而终日汨汨。如溪潢涧潦之为。则不崇朝而涸矣。安能泽加万类乎。故士非能言之为贵。而发于不得不言之为美。道充于中。不得已而后言。则其言必传。无意于辨。不得已而后辨。则其辨必明。昔者孔子之门。以言语称者有矣。惟颜子不言如愚人。然由后世考之。凡颜子之言。皆为天下准。与圣人之旨相表里。而宰予子贡。发言立论。輙多疵而不适乎中。岂非好辨者未必能言。而善言者必本于黙乎。先生阅乎事变多矣。求乎义理精矣。知夫无益之辨之不足务。盖将卽颜子而师之。而今而后。先生之道益隆矣。立乎朝。则发而为正论。垂乎后则揭而为大训。皆有道者之馀事也。先生之黙。乌知非言之至者乎。二三子何患焉。于是疑者谢曰。子之言似矣。请质诸先生。置之屋壁。以袪弟子之惑。(自识行书)馀不善书。偶得佳纸。录此文未终篇。辄弃去。王君修德见而足之。珠璧在后。鱼目奚所发其光邪。乙丑(西元一三八五年)五月廿七日。孝孺戏题。印记资料:

收藏着录: 石渠宝笈三编(延春阁),第四册,页1709-1711 收藏着录: 故宫书画录(卷一),第一册,页93-97 收藏着录: 故宫历代法书全集,第五册,页3-8、220-221 收藏着录: 方孝孺(西元一三五七-一四0二年),浙江宁海人。字希直,一字希古。建文即位(一三九九年)召为翰林学士,进侍讲,寻陞侍讲学士。靖难时,以十族殉。年四十六,諡文正。其传固不以书,而刚方不折之气,流溢笔墨间。此卷存楷书十八行,后题行书四行;楷书于欧柳为近,行书秀雅,并有刚毅之气,即以书论,亦为彝伦之冠冕。 收藏着录: Fang Hsiao-ju (whose style names were Hsi-chih and Hsi-ku) was a native of Ning-hai, Chekiang. In 1399 he was summoned to serve as a Hanlin Academician and held the posts of Academician and then Academician Expositor. When the Chien-wen Emperor's throne was usurped, Fang died a martyr's death at the age of forty-six and was given the posthumous name Wen-cheng. Although his fame does not rest on his being an excellent calligrapher, traces of his indomitable character can be seen in his brushwork. The first eighteen lines of this piece were written in the standard script, the style of which here resembles that of the T'ang calligraphers Ou-yang Hsun and Liu Kung-chuan. The remainder of the work consists of four lines in larger characters in a particularly elegant yet forceful running script. For such fine calligraphy Fang was held to be first among his peers.
