馀酷嗜苦笋。谏者至十人。戏作苦笋赋。其词曰。僰道苦笋。冠冕两川。甘脆惬当。小苦而及成味。温润稹密。多啗而不疾人。盖苦而有昧。如忠谏之可活国。多而不害。如举士而皆得贤。是其锺江山之秀气。故能深雨露而避风烟。食肴以之开道。酒客为之流涎。彼桂玫之与梦汞。又安得与之同年。蜀人曰。苦笋不可食。食之动痼疾。使人萎而瘠。予亦未尝与之下。盖上士不谈而喻。中士进则若信退则眩焉。下士信耳。而不信目。其顽不可镌。李太白曰。但得醉中趣。勿为醒者传。

A famous Northern Song poet, he founded the Jiangxi school, his Collection of Shangu still surviving. Also famed for his calligraphy, he excelled at running and cursive scripts, his regular script in a style of its own. It is said he first studied Zhou Yue’s style and later turned to those of Wang Xianzhi, Zhang Xu, Huaisu, and Yan Zhenqing. Expansive and eccentric, Huang’s calligraphy is noted for wave-like features widely diverging from tradition. Here the brushwork is vigorous, the forms compact but with longer strokes extended for a dashing freedom, revealing a leisurely and unbridled refinement while fully expressing a dynamic aesthetic to the slanting quality.(20100406) 内容简介(英文): Huang T'ing-chien, a native of Kiangsi province, excelled at running and cursive script. His horizontally elongated characters and slightly wavering strokes have a centered and powerful quality to them. His direct and handsome style has an overall harmony and expressive quality that reveals the beauty of angled brushwork. Although his style appears somewhat awkward, it actually reflects his mature and individual manner, which is quite different from tradition formulae. In this peece, the brushwork is powerfully elongated and expressive. These features reflect the elegant harmony of his untrammeled and heroic manner.
