This work transcribing a seven-character truncated verse in cursive script was calligraphed on silk decorated with phoenix designs, the style being similar to that of Gaozong. The strokes in Gaozong’s script, however, are fuller in form with characters slightly flattened and wider, transmitting the archaic manner of draft cursive. The dots and strokes here are thin yet powerful, the brush movement rounded with fluid turns. Character forms are slightly thin and elongated, revealing a difference with Gaozong’s calligraphy. This work may have been personally calligraphed by Xiaozong and presented to an attendant official.Xiaozong enjoyed the poetry and writing of the famous Northern Song scholar-artist Su Shi, which he would often chant or transcribe. From this intimate work of poetry that he calligraphed and records left by writers in the past, we can capture a glimpse of Xiaozong’s tendencies in art.(20101015)
