He excelled at painting and calligraphy, the best in his day. His calligraphy follows the Two Wangs, achieving the classical spirit harmony of Jin calligraphers, and he became a leader in Yuan calligraphic circles. “Guozha” was a kind of preserved fish wrapped in lotus leaves. The left and right leaves here are both said to be Zhao’s copy of Wang’s calligraphy. The brushwork is pure and handsome, the strokes rounded and fluid, comparable to Wang’s and achieving much of his elegant reserved spirit.
