Prabhûtaratna, the Buddha of the Past, vows that wherever the Lotus Sûtra is spoken, he and his stûpa will magically appear in the air. A jewelled stûpa is a symbol of the Lotus Sûtra. By writing sûtras, especially the 60,000 some characters of the Lotus Sûtra on a stûpa, one accumulates merit. The stûpa is outlined in vermilion, and in accordance with the text, there are seven tiers. The balustrades and niches are ornamented with precious stones and bells. The focal point of the stûpa is the central niche on the bottom tier where the Buddha Shâkyamuni preaches. The written sûtra begins at the top right of this niche, covers the entire stûpa, and ends to the left of the beginning of the sûtra. The central niches of each tier reflect the content of the Lotus Sûtra written nearby, and in ascending order are occupied by Shâkyamuni Preaching, Shâkyamuni and Prabhûtaratna., Buddhas of the Past, the seven-treasure stûpa, the parturitions of Shâkyamuni (his manifestations), the Buddha Dîpamkara, and Maitreya. The niches to either side are occupied by bodhisattvas, lohans, and lay devotees. The combination of gold and colors is elegant and refined.
