His tzu (style name) was Tzu-ming, his hao (sobriquet) Yüeh-shan. He excelled at calligraphy as well as the painting of horses. His rendering of "Stallions Emerging from the Wo-wa River" received Imperial approval. There is a painting by Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559) depicting a scholar playing a lute by a stream, in which the composition and brush style resemble this work. The inscription on Wen's picture reads: A copy after Chao Meng-fu's 'Meditating over the Lute on an Abandoned Mountain'. Judging from Wen's inscription referring to Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322) and the resemblance between Wen's and Jen's works, we may assume that this painting by Jen Jen-fa was modeled after Chao Meng-fu.
