At 27, he arrived in China as a missionary. With an art background, he also painted for the court under the K’ang-hsi, Yung-cheng, and Ch’ien-lung emperors. His style fuses Chinese and Western techniques. The title of this work indicates that this white falcon was presented as tribute from the chief of the Korchin tribe of Mongols. Castiglione used the technique of light and shadow to render different textural qualities suggested by the lustrous plumage of the falcon and the textile draped over the stand upon which the bird is perched. He also moved the focus closer to the viewer, revealing only part of the stand to create a lively effect as if actually there.
