At the foot of the mountains stands a dwelling overlooking a river. Outside a pavilion rests a crane, while inside, a lute lies ready to be played. The strength of the brushwork is striking, and the ink conveys a sense of antiquity. The painting as a whole is imbued with a feeling of untroubled purity. The monk Chü-jan was a native of Nanking, Kiangsu. He excelled at painting landscapes, and was noted for his mist-filled scenes. He is traditionally considered the most outstanding student of Tung Yüan.
