The scholar with staff stops to appreciate the fragrance as the young servant with a lute points to the blossoms and turns to talk to him. A pervading chill issues forth from the snow-covered mountains. This unsigned painting done with an exposed brush tip probably was executed by a later artist working in the style of Hsia Kuei.Hsia Kuei was a native of Hangchow who served as a painter at the courts of Ning-tsung and Li-tsung. Specializing in landscapes and figures, he was equally as famous as Ma Yüan, and they were known as “Ma-Hsia.”
