The fifth emperor of the Ming dynasty, he ruled from 1425 to 1435 under the reign name Hsüan-te. He enjoyed writing poems and painting, and he was able to produce free and natural works. He can thus be compared to Emperor Hui-tsung (r.1101- 125), the famous Northern Sung emperor who was a renowned artist and calligrapher.Hsüan-tsung painted Gibbons at Play when he was 29 years old. Squatting on a rock, a female gibbon clasps her baby as the male gibbon plucks loquats for them. The theme of paternalism and maternalism permeates the composition, demonstrating one of the most important moral principles of basic relationships. In painting gibbons, Hsüan-tsung captured the poetic charm of I Yüan-chi, a Sung dynasty painter of apes. The brush lines of the bamboo, lush reeds, thorny shrubs, and loquats in the background appear fluid and natural. The rocks are depicted in round, moist texture strokes reminiscent of those of Tung Yüan and Chü-jan. According to the signature on this work, it was done in the second year of the Xuande reign (1427) by Xuanzong at the Chinese age of 29. It vividly and warmly depicts joy in the relationships found in a family of gibbons. Squatting on a rock, the mother gibbon clasps her baby, the father having plucked loquats for them. The youth has its left arm around its mother's neck and reaches out for the fruit teasingly presented by its father on the other bank of the stream. The varied poses of the gibbons with their animated expressions and actions are complemented by the expressive texture of fur rendered ingeniously with light and dark as well as wet and dry applications of ink.
