In his early years he studied under the painter Zhang Ke from his hometown, and later he came under the personal instruction of the famous literati Wang Jian and Wang Shimin. Wang Hui’s extensive viewing of ancient works greatly enhanced his art of painting.This work depicts a river flowing through a valley with mountain homes scattered around foothills by the water’s edge. The fisherman in a boat on the river reveals the delight of mountain life in peace and leisure. The brushwork is succinct, using even lines to delineate the mountains, rocks, and trees, after which some texturing was added with light washes of ochre and cyanine blue, giving the entire painting an even fresher and lightly elegant quality. The rocks, flat outcroppings, moss dots, and fisherman here are all motifs often seen in Huang Gongwang’s works.(20110609)
