A native of Wujin in Jiangsu, he at first excelled at landscape painting but later felt that he could not compete with the master Wang Hui (1632-1717), turning to flowers instead. His style derives from the “boneless” method of washes used by Xu Chongsi (fl. latter half of 10th c.), but with his own interpretation as well. With his unique style, Yun Shouping became a master of flower painting in the Qing dynasty.This leaf, which comes from “Album of Flowers Sketched from Life,” depicts branches of crape myrtle emerging from mists against a sliver of bright moon looming in the background. Not only does this work highlight the beauty of blossoms, it also expresses the luminous clarity of the moon. Imbuing a painting with a lyrical realm is another choice when an artist composes an arrangement. Also special here is the use of monochrome ink to depict the crape myrtle, with only the moon rendered in washes of gamboges yellow to bring out the atmosphere of a moonlit night with even greater refinement.(20110102)
