He came to China in 1715 to proselytize, but was summoned to the Imperial Painting Academy in the Inner Court, where he served three emperors. Castiglione originally painted with a primarily European flavor, but as this did not meet with imperial favor, he created a hybrid style that incorporated both Eastern and Western techniques. He excelled at painting from life, and is noted for his renditions of figures, flowers, and birds, and especially for his paintings of horses. He had many followers, and is popular to this day. This painting of a pair of grosbeaks perched in the branches of a cherry tree is the eighth leaf from Castiglione’s album Immortal Calyxes, Eternal Spring. Brilliantly tinted in subtle layers of color, the birds are limned in a spectrum of contrasting hues that range from lustrous pale shades to charcoal black. The meticulously defined inkwork of the birds’ glossy feathering makes them appear three-dimensional.
