He arrived in China at the age of 27 to do missionary work but was summoned to the imperial court, where he served the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong Emperors as a painter. He was skilled at depicting figures and especially dogs, horses, and bird-and-flower subjects. This leaf, from “Album of Immortal Blossoms in an Everlasting Spring,” depicts a single lily stalk in full bloom extending into the composition from the lower right corner. Entwined around the stalk is a tender winding peony with another stalk of flowers behind it. The two different main blossoms of gorgeous red and pure white intersect to create a dramatic contrast. Although done on silk, Castiglione was still able to express the subject using Western methods of shading, giving these blossoms of splendid color a volumetric effect. Differing greatly from the traditional Chinese method of outlines filled with color, it can be considered in a style of its own.(20110102)
