Late 14th c.) Ming Dynasty Chou Wei, a native of Kiangsu province, was widely learned and talented. He was especially accomplished in painting. Early in the Hung-wu reign (1368-1398), he was summoned to court and he did landscape paintings to adorn the palace walls. Slandered by a jealous colleague, he was executed. T’ao Yuan-ming was famous for his fondness of wine. In this, the 5th leaf from Album of Paintings Through the Ages, T’ao is shown drunk with his chest exposed. Oblivious to all, he is supported by a servant. Painted in monochrome ink in the outline manner (pai-miao), the untrammeled spirit is similar to that in the previous Yuan dynasty. The literati manner here differs from the Sung academic style that became popular at the Ming court.
