Here a lady of the court stands gracefully before a mirror, attended by two maids who are bringing her a dressing case. Both the figures and the background scenery are depicted with great care, and the painting, although brightly colored, never loses a sense of delicacy. The artist's wife was an imperial princess, and so Wang was well acquainted with the resplendent lifestyle of the court, of which he has given us a glimpse in this painting. He was the consort of the Grand Princess of Wei, who was the daughter of the Sung emperor Ying-tsung (r. 1064-1066). Wang served as a governing official in Li-chou, Shensi. A noted painter and calligrapher, he modeled his landscape paintings on those of Li Ch'eng (919-967) and Kuo Hsi (ca. 1000-ca. 1090). 内容简介(英文): A woman admires her make-up in a mirror; she is attended by two women holding a tray of cosmetics.
