On either side are two maidservants with hair bound in two whorled chignons. One holds a fan, the other a while cloth. The artist, by using fine and tough strokes as well as shaded washes for the clothing, has differentiated between the main and secondary figures. Gold pigment was applied to the vermilion robe for a decorative touch, and the fine brushwork captures a sense of archaic beauty.This is the 4th leaf from the album Famous Paintings of the Sung and Yüan. Though unsigned, the partial seals of Chao Meng-fu (1254-1322) appear in the lower left. Thus, some scholars suggest that this may be a copy by Chao after an older work.
