The main character of the work is seated on a round-backed armchair with curved arms as he appreciates by torchlight the numerous trees in full bloom, expressing a refined taste for elegance in life. The distant hills were touched with blue and washes of light ink, making the misty atmosphere of the evening scenery stand out even further.The main building is a hexagonal, double-eave pavilion, the top of which has an ornamental finial. The roof ridges slope sharply downwards as the eaves form wings decorated with ornamental figures, the parallel lines in between representing tiles. Corridors extend on either side of the pavilion, forming a hidden courtyard with half-enclosed eave corridors surrounding the blossoming trees and representing what perhaps was once a rear garden in the imperial city at the capital, Lin’an (Hangzhou). Ma Lin served as an Attendant (zhihou) in the Painting Academy under Emperors Ningzong and Lizong.(20101015)
