The cliff at the left seems to float in the sky as the trunk and branches of an old pine tree extend to the right, turning back to the two scholars below who form the focus of the painting. Gazing out from the shoals of the foreground bank is a view of the river and its distant shore, where a pocket of vegetation seems to sway half-hidden, expressing a misty and remote scene.The depiction of the tree here as seemingly moving with the breeze is indeed one of the characteristic features of Xia Gui’s works. However, the washes of ink for the shores, the peripheries left blank, and the technique of “axe-cut” texture strokes in the lower part are more reminiscent of works by Xia Gui’s contemporary, Ma Yuan. Thus, this work can be considered a mixture of both their styles, perhaps being done slightly later than either artist.(20101015)
