K'o Chiu-ssu, a Yüan painter, praised Ch'en's works as being as fine as those of Huang Ch'ungtao, a well known horse painter in the Hsüan-ho Painting Academy. Especially during the Ming period (1368-1644), Ch'en Chü-chung was praised for his specialty, depicting Nomadic tribesmen and horses.This picture depicts the climax of a hunting scene. In the right of the picture, an archer, turning his body on a galloping horse, is preparing to shoot a deer. The deer, frightened by the noise of the hunt, is jumping in a panic-stricken manner. The dynasty tension between the galloping horse, stooping man and jumping deer gives the picture an immediacy.
