The couch is marked with a dense pattern of interlocking strokes of light, even ink, almost like a wash. One of the most breathtaking parts of the painting is the feat of inscribing, the entire Kuan-yin (Samantamukha) chapter of the Lotus Sutra within single square inch on the screen behind the figure. The writing is so small that it can hardly be made out with the naked eye. It would not be an exaggeration to say that this painting exhausts the limits of fine and delicate line drawing.
