The painting depicts oxen playing in a forest grove. Cowherds joke with each other. The painting, done with a rough brush and dry ink, was painted very quickly in a fit of inspiration, completely unrestrained. Some of the figures are roughly sketched in. The painting allows us to view the artist’s expressive self.
