His style name was Jo-shui and his sobriquet was Tan-hsüan. when he first began to study painting, he obtained an introduction to study under Chao Meng-fu (1254 -1322). Thus his paintings tend to return to ancient models but without the conventionality of the Academy painters.This painting is of two wild geese by a river bank. One is stretching his neck and pecking at the root of a river rush. The other is resting with his head on his wing; his half-closed eye gives him a drowsy look. The geese have a life-like quality. In the background of the painting there are two or three rushes and withered lotus leaves of the past season. This background heightens the bleak and chilly atmosphere of the scene.
