He was good at painting landscapes, which were respected by the scholars of Wu. His brush manner was archaistic, and his inkwork was moist. He also excelled at figure paintings and portraiture. “Lohan Mending a Cassock” is a commonly seen subject in Ch’an Buddhist paintings. In this painting, a lohan is seated under a tree mending a cassock. A pair of monkeys are next to him helping to twist thread. Placed on the rock table are sûtras, a Buddhist sculpture, and a vase. In this work, the brushwork is extremely rhythmical as the whole composition is connected by means of dots and short lines which were roughly, but fluently, executed. This painting is dated to 1638, when Chang Hung was 61-years-old.
