He followed the family tradition of painting, his abilities far surpassing contemporaries, ranking him among the Four Ch’ing Masters. Depicted here are piled peaks and ridges, scattered river hamlets, and lonely and desolate vistas. Wang used a slanted brush to texture the peaks, and the brushwork appears cutting. Using ocher and green for the mountains, the painter added or omitted these colors as he pleased to create many variations. According to the inscription by the artist, this painting was completed in 1701, when Wang’s nominal age was 60.
