He received the chin-shih civil service degree in 1745 and was a skilled painter of plum blossoms and birds. The painting is a record of Chang’s travels and the scenery he experienced. Compositional forms completely fill the paper and white areas are minimal. Each peak is identified by an inscription at its base. Mountains and rocks are given volume by the use of rich, fine texture strokes in the manner of Wang Meng. The use of color is beautiful and elegant. Although the mountains are complexly layered, the artist has avoided the appearance of overcrowding.
