It may, however, be deduced from his works that he was a court painter of the Ch’ien-lung period (1736-1795), The present work is an illustration of Fan Ch’eng-ta of the Sung dynasty’s poem “Yüeh-fu of the Twelfth Month in the Village: Caving for the Fields and Silkworms”. On the night of the twenty-fifth of the twelfth month it was the custom in Chiang-nan for the farming families to bind long bundles of grasses together. These brands were then lit, and people would carry them as they went in groups along the paths between the fields. Thus they prayed for good fortune in the coming year for their fields, ploughing, silkworms, and mulberry trees.
