He was famous for his figure, flower and horse paintings, and was best known for his paintings of dragons. Throughout his life, Chou enjoyed gathering with his many friends. In 1729, he was arrested by the Ch’ing government for organizing the masses in opposition to Manchu rule. In this painting, all of the objects are grouped on the left side of the composition, leaving an empty space on the right. A black horse strolls under two gnarled and twisted cypress trees. The horse was drawn in outline, then covered with hematite and ink washes, then coated thinly with soot. This coloring technique produces a bright and fresh image.
