His father, Yü Hsün, and his younger brother, Yü Chih, were also talented painters. During the Ch’ien-lung period (1736-1797), Yü Sheng served at the court as a painter along with T’ang Tai, Chou K’un, and others. He excelled in painting landscapes, birds-and-flowers, bamboos, orchids and insects. In the snow, wild geese huddle together close to the root of a willow tree, sparrows perch on top of the branches and camellias grow behind a rock. The bright red flowers are half covered with white snow, producing a charming color contrast. Although the scene is of a cold winter, it is full of life.
