The number 9 is particularly “yang” (as in yin-yang); the “yang” 3 is multiplied 3 times (3x3, hence the name Double Yang Day). One of the events associated with this day is ascending the heights, wearing dogwood, appreciating chrysanthemums, and drinking wine, which began in the Han dynasty (206 BC-AD 220) as a superstition to avoid bad luck. The superstition faded and by the T’ang and Sung it became a time for scholars to gather, drink, view chrysanthemums, ascend heights, and compose poetry. The foreground here is filled with chrysanthemums as scholars gather and bring them for viewing. Up in the hills, scholars meet with wine and food to view the scenery. 内容简介（英文）： Occupations of the Twelve Months: The Ninth MonthAnonymous Court PaintersCh’ing Dynasty (1644-1911)Chrysanthemum became widely admired among the men of letters ever since the nature-poet T’ao Y üan-ming (365-427) expressed his love for the flower. As it comes into full bloom in the ninth month of the lunar calendar, the main activity of the month is to hold meetings for showing and appreciating chrysanthemums. Throughout the centuries, many different methods and techniques for cultivating the flower have developed, and chrysanthemum lovers would bring their objects to the flower show for mutual admiration and enjoyment.This painting depicts the scene of such a chrysanthemum show. Choice specimens in pots are well arranged in the garden, and some are being brought in by boat. Both men and women are engaged in leisurely enjoyment of the show. Far away in the field people are seen out picnicking with food and wine; another major activity of the month is mountain climbing.
