Li Lin (style name Tz’u-kung) was a native of Ning-po in Chekiang. He excelled at the ink-outline style and painting Buddhist figures with flowing “water-plant” brush strokes. He often used dry “scorched” ink and was adept at painting his figures with large, heavy eyebrows. Li was known as a follower of Ting Yun-p’eng, though said by some to have surpassed his teacher. In fact, he fancied himself a reincarnation of the great Sung figure painter Li Kung-lin. These album leaves represent the various forms and attitudes of oxen and herdboys. Their manners are playful and seem to have been casually rendered. The poems above the paintings discuss the character and feelings of the subjects.
