His style name was Fu-hsi and his sobriquets were Ch’i-hsia and T’ien-yü shan-jen. He excelled in birds and flowers. Early in life, he studied under Yün Shou-p’ing. Later he discussed the six principles of painting with Ch’iang T’ing-hsi. His flowers done in “boneless” technique became his best. Wang Hui commented that Ma Yüan-yü painted with energy and freedom and was not fettered by tradition. Five silkworms keep eating on mulberry leaves. Two moths mate. The resplendent coloration is softly applied. The elements are depicted with clarity and a sense of reality. The painting is the fifth leaf from the album Paintings of Flowers.
