In northern T’ai-an County, Shantung, it was in antiquity the site of imperial visits for sacrificing to the heavens and earth. The Book of Poetry mentions that “Mount T’ai is craggy (yen), looked up to by Lu,” which is perhaps why it is also known as “Tai-yen”. This album is of scenic sites at Mount T’ai. The Manchu Hung-wu belonged to the imperial Ch’ing clan. His father Yün-pi was the son of the K’ang-hsi Emperor. Hung-wu specialized in poetry, calligraphy, seal carving, and painting. The latter was influenced by the trend of imitating the past. After following Wang Yüan-ch’i, he focused on his own style.
