He received his chih-shih civil service degree in 1712 and was appointed to the Ministry of Rites in the Board of State Affairs and then as Reader-in-waiting and concurrent Supervisor of the Heir Apparent. In calligraphy, he achieved the style of Tung Ch’i-ch’ang (1555-1636). Wang T’u-pin is also the author of Collected Poems of the Studio of Heavenly Fragrance. In a green pot with water caltrop designs and next to a first-shaped rock is a twisted miniature (bonsai) plum tree, its convoluted trunk appearing quite archaic and elegant with its white plum blossom buds. The painting was done using outlines and colors. The beauty of bonsai trees is that they are miniature versions of large ones. The design of this painting corresponds to a “sketched life ” (still life) painting, just as if a pot in a garden had been transported into the painting.
