A talented landscapist, he and other artists including Ting Kuan-p’eng, Ch’en Chih-tao, Chin K’un, and Sun Hu painted the scroll called “The City of Cathay” and thereby gained fame. Whether he used rounded brushstrokes in outline or ink washes to describe light and shadow, Tai Hung always exhibited great precision. The application of color is also masterful and elegant, giving the viewer the impression of an actual scene. The plum tree and birds in this painting are fine examples of this characteristic. This type of meticulous Court painting, however, is far from the literati painters’ philosophy of capturing the idea and not the real form.
