She was good at poetry, calligraphy, and painting and praised for possessing these “Three Perfections” among lady artists. She inherited the family painting style. Her grandfather was fond of planting flowers and painting bamboo with rocks, plants, and insects; all of which were elegant and extraordinary. He particularly excelled at painting plum blossoms. Many people requested plum blossom paintings from him and he often responded by presenting them with paintings of red plum blossoms. He was praised at the time as “Chi of the Red Plum.” In this album leaf is a branch of white plum blossoms and one of red which extend into the picture plane in the upper left corner with elegant and graceful gestures. The trunk of the red plum was colored with mineral green and rouge was used to dot the petals. Lead white was liberally applied to depict the circular petals on the white plum blossom branch. The numerous blossoms are facing up and down, and either open or closed. Their poses are charmingly delicate, especially those of the “boneless” red plum with no outlines in numerous variations of soft to heavy applications of deep to light colors. Thus, from this painting we can catch a glimpse of Chi Nan’s style of red plum blossoms.
