Originally a native of She-hsien in Anhwei, he later moved to Chia-ting, where he, T’ang Shih-sheng, Lou Chien, and Ch’eng Chia-sui (1565-1643) were called “The Four Gentlemen of Chia-ting.” Li Liu-fang was a friend of Ch’ien Ch’ien-i, and Li’s literary works were preeminent among the literati. Li was good at poetry, excelled at calligraphy, and did exquisitely in painting; he subsequently became known as one of the “Nine Friends of Painting.” His landscapes “sketched from life” are so fascinating as to form his own distinctive style. This is a painting of autumnal mountains at sunset with elegant woods and frigid mists. The style appears casual and graceful, having not been restrained by any formulated methods. This is one of Li Liu-fang’s paintings which has an excellent composition.
