His style name was Ju-hsün. His bird-and-flower paintings are imbued with life, and his brushwork in hoary. The painting depicts a katydid on a tree leaf and a flying butterfly on the upper right corner. Its inscription reads: “[Done] playfully in the style of Ch’en Ch’un (1483-1544) on the fifteenth day of the seventh month in 1616.” Ch’en Ch’un’s spontaneous expression had great influence on later generations. On this painting, the ink color is fluid, the use of the brush free. Though the work is bold in style, it is delicate and drawn according to painting principles. It indeed reflects the style of Ch’en Ch’un. This painting is the twelfth leaf from the Album of Folding Fan Paintings of the Ming Dynasty III.
