He excelled at poetry, classical prose, the semi-cur-sive script of calligraphy, and possessed a particularly keen understanding of painting. Past records record that he studied calligraphy with Chu Yün-ming (1460-1526) and painting with Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559). However, his influences were extensive; he often combined the brush method of Ni Tsan with the ancient method of applying blue and green color.Set amidst layered mountains and a waterfall, old temples nestle under a cliff. Two figures stand on a bank in conversation. The mountain in the distance and the village houses are all enshrouded in light clouds and mist. Compositionally, the right side of the painting is crowded and the left side is sparse. The brushwork and ink is lush and fresh, and the application of color is elegant and light. The lines and texture strokes were executed in a seemingly carefree manner.
