He excelled at painting religious works and figural subjects. Depicted in this painting is the corner of a garden with a pavilion, in which palace women are together admiring scrolls, conversing, and arranging flowers in what must have been a typical palace scene. The use of the brush in this work is exceptionally refined and vigorous, while the coloring is elegant and pure. The features of the women are all graceful.Ch’ing craftsmen paid particular attention to the decoration, materials, and production of furniture. The lohan platform depicted here has a low back and sides inlaid with slabs of decorative marble cut to give the impression of splashed-ink landscapse. The platform has a waist, four short, strong drum-shaped legs, and inward-curving horse-hoof feet. To the side is a long table with humpbacked sketchers and horse-hoof legs. It is not only beautiful, but also characterized by understated simplicity.
