Here, the ink captures the form of the rocks with a minimum of modeling strokes. In contrast, the birds have been meticulously limned with a minute attention to detail that reveals the subtle modeling of their feathers.The painter seems to have incorporated Western concepts of realism, and was familiar with the European techniques that allow a painter to create a sense of mass, substance, and three-dimensionality. The artist may have been modeling his style on that of the Ch’ien-lung period court painters, who were influenced by the Italian missionary painter, Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766).
