Since his ancestors came from Hunan, he also had the sobriquet “Layman of Hengshan.” This scroll was begun in 1535, requiring more than a year to complete. According to a description by his student Zhou Tianqiu, Wen Zhengming in his early years copied the “Thousand Character Classic” as part of his daily lessons, therefore accounting for his numerous renditions of this text. The entire scroll here is divided into the four script types of regular, cursive, clerical, and seal, the calligraphic methods being exacting and practiced. The clerical and seal scripts, in particular, often reveal elements of regular script techniques. The brushwork is sharp and forceful, reflecting the period style of the time.
