Critics have praised his brushwork as surpassing that of Su Shih, Huang T’ing-chien, Mi Fu, and in the “Preface to the Sacred Teaching,” as he was gifted in all scripts.Here, Wen Cheng-ming transcribed his own poem in regulated verse entitled “Reverently Awaiting the Emperor’s Return at the Southern Altar,” found in volume ten of Collectanea of Fu-t’ien. The characters are quite large and the brushwork strong and bold, a powerful aura transcending the entire work with characters and brushwork much in the untrammeled manner of Huang T’ing-chien. 内容简介(英文): Wen Zhengming (original name Bi; going by the style name Zhengming after the age 42; changing his style name to Zhongzheng; sobriquet Hengshan jushi) was a native of Suzhou in Jiangsu. Gifted at poetry and prose, calligraphy, and painting, many of his surviving works of calligraphy were done in running and cursive script. Critics have praised his brushwork as surpassing that of Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu, while tracing back to Wang Xizhi, revealing his gift in all scripts. In this work, Wen Zhengming transcribed his own poem in seven-character regulated verse entitled, “Reverently Awaiting the Emperor’s Return from the Southern Altar.” The characters are quite large at four Chinese inches across, and the brushwork is strong and bold, a powerful aura transcending the entire work with characters and brushwork much in the untrammeled manner of Huang Tingjian.(20110913)
