In painting landscapes, he followed Juran (fl. late 10th c.) and Wen Tong (1018-1079) in monochrome ink bamboo. “Yundang” in the title here refers to a kind of bamboo. The artist in his inscription mentioned, “The valley of Yundang has aged mists and fog.” Yundang Valley is in Yangxian, Shaanxi. Filled with bamboo, the famous Song bamboo painter Wen Tong built his Piyun Pavilion there. In this rendering of two sprays of bamboo, the composition is simple and the brushwork done with rich ink.
