He was the maternal grandson of Chao Meng-fu, and in the area of painting, was greatly influenced by his grandfather. Wang Meng became a very accomplished painter, and he was also skilled in composing poetry.In 1362, when Wang Meng was in the residence of Tsou Fu-lei, he executed this work. Wang Meng’s use of ink ranges from light to dark tones, with a predominance of thick, scorched ink. His layers of dots and strokes are interwoven in extreme complexity, yet are very clear and orderly. This painting especially evokes the atmosphere of profundity which dense, verdant and dark forest scenes may arouse.
