A disciple of Wang Yüan-ch’i, he excelled at painting landscapes. In addition to the works of his teacher, Ho I also studied the works of former masters, but he never fell into the mannerisms of his day. In this painting, Ho I used the “cloudy mountain” painting method originated by Mi Fu (1041-1107), who employed light and dark ink dots to render multiple ridges and banks in monochrome washes. Ho I thus achieved an ample accumulation of ink and was especially able to represent the feeling of a vast, obscure scene.
