Adopting the works of Chü-jan (f1. ca. 960-80) as his model, Wu Chen was able to establish a distinctly personal style.This album contains 22 leaves. The first two leaves of calligraphy are comments which Wu Chen has taken from the writings of Su Shih (1036-1101). The remaining twenty leaves are paintings of bamboo in monochrome ink. Wu Chen painted and gave the album to his son, Fo-nu, in 1350, when Wu Chen was 70-years-old. This album arrests bamboo in all its aspects of change and can be said to actually capture its very disposition and nature. The three characters of the title were written by Wang I-p'eng, who received his kung-sheng civil service degree in the reign of the Hung-chih emperor (r. 1488-1506). 内容简介(英文): Wu Zhen (style name Zhongkui, sobriquet Meihua daoren, self-styled name Meishami) was a native of Jiaxing who was gifted at poetry and prose. Good at calligraphy, he also excelled at the painting of landscapes and bamboo-and-stone subjects.This work was done in 1350 at the Chinese age of 71 as a painting manual for Fonu, consisting of 22 leaves. The first two transcribe text by Su Shi, while the remaining 20 leaves are paintings of bamboo. Each leaf is written in cursive script with poetry, reflections on, and tips for bamboo painting. The entire album not only reveals complete familiarity with painting different bamboo, it also shows how Wu Zhen applied cursive script to painting.
