He was skilled in all of the literati arts: poetry, prose, calligraphy and painting. Wen Cheng-ming learned painting from Shen Chou and he became one of the four masters of the Ming dynasty. This album is comprised of eight leaves and was painted in 1533, when the artist was sixty-four. On this leaf, the narcissus is painted in the pai-miao ink-outline mode and provides an interesting contrast with the positive image of the bamboo in monochrome ink. An air of elegance and purity infuses the whole scene.
