Orphaned and destitute when he was a child, Ch’ien as an adult was still able to study reading and painting under the famous Wen Cheng-ming. Ch’ien excelled at painting landscapes, orchids, and bamboo. The works here represent Ch’ien’s illustrations of sites in Kiangsu province. He rendered urban and rural scenery from T’ai-ch’ang to Yangchow. This album includes depictions of garden buildings among trees, arched bridges, willow ponds, bamboo groves, meandering fences, and other fine scenes witnessed by Ch’ien in his travels. The brushwork is elegant and entices the viewer into his art and travels. Sixteen of the 32 leaves from Ch’ien’s album have been chosen for display here.
